To analyze a circuit knowledge of series and parallel connection is very important. By the knowledge of this we can find how much current is going through the resistor or any appliance. And in turn we can measure the power, heat energy developed etc. So let us study one by one.
Series connection
Lets consider the circuit where resistor are in series connection.
Here resistors R1 and R2 are connected in series combination. A voltage source ( V ) is connected across them delivering a current I. The same current is flowing through both resistors R1 and R2. As current passes through each Resistors, Produces a voltage across those resistors. That is voltage developed across R1 and R2 are IR1 and IR2 Respectively. So we can conclude as
- In series connection current will be same and voltage will be different
The equivalent resistance
Using this we can replace circuit as
Parallel conncerion
Consider the circuit with parallel connection of resistors
In this circuit we can observe that voltage source is delivering the current I. It is then split into I1and I2. This values of I1and I2 depend upon the values of Resistors. And we can also observe that the voltage across both the resistors are same.
So we can write, In parallel connection
- Current will be different and voltage will be same.

We will cover the numerical of this portion in a separate section.
